Zack Lober:
Zack Lober is a twenty-five year old native of Montreal and has been playing bass since the age of thirteen. His musical studies began with professor George Doxas at Lindsay Place High School where he studied cello and electric bass. From there, his studies continued at Vanier College, where he graduated with a degree in music on electric and acoustic bass. He graduated from McGill University in June 2000 with a Bachelor of Music degree majoring in Jazz Performance with high distinction in Jazz Bass. During his studies, Zack was the recipient of numerous scholarships and awards that have included The Lindsay Place Music Achievement Award (1994), The Vanier College Board of Directors Program Award and Honors certificate (1997), The McGill Music Entrance Scholarship (1997), The Nathalie-Clair-Feldman Memorial Award (McGill 1998), and The Willy-Levain and William Viner Memorial Scholarship (McGill1999).
He is the recipient of three grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and recently acquired funding from Emploi-Quebec's Young Entrepreneurs Program for the recording and release of the jazz trio album BYPRODUCT. His ensemble experience has included the CJAD All-City Big Band directed by Denny Christianson as well as the McGill Symphony Orchestra directed by Timothy Vernon. He has participated in many recordings for the CBC/Radio-Canada programs JazzBeat and Silence! On Jazz and has performed numerous times at the Montreal Jazz Festival, Off-Festival, and Ottawa Jazz Festival as both a leader and sideman. Other special moments have included private studies with bassists George Mitchell and Mark Helias, live performances with Ben Monder, Donny McCaslin, Dave Binney, and Kenny Werner as well as attending the 2000 and 2001 editions of the Banff Centre for the Arts International Jazz Workshop. Presently, Zack can be seen performing with groups led by Remi Bolduc, Ranee Lee, Gary Schwartz and BYPRODUCT a trio he co-leads with Jim and Chester Doxas.
