BYPRODUCT (Byproduct)

As the name, title and label indicate, this is DIY all the way. Don’t know why it should be that way - Chet Doxas (reeds and electronics), Zack Lober (double bass), and Jim Doxas (drums) should be able to get some record company interest, for this is quite an interesting album. The melodies on the nine compositions, all originals, are of the very memorable, haven’t-I-heard-that-somewhere variety, and the playing is at once tasteful and highly interactive. This is a good, solid debut, and if Byproduct wanted to serve notice that they’re serious, they’ve succeeded admirably. The next album will not be DIY – not, that is, unless Byproduct chooses otherwise.
